What is Medical Informatics?

Computer science is omnipresent in everyday medicine - in processing medical data, for instance in computer tomography and other applications. Medical informatics is a sub-area of computer science and is concerned with hospital information systems, electronic patient files and protecting data generated in routine medical work.

If you choose to study with us, you can expect extensive, in-depth initial training in IT. As part of this, you'll learn the fundamentals of medicine and computer science-relevant knowledge for medicine and health care. You'll also learn key skills such as teamworking and communicating effectively. You'll learn how to gain an overview of and analyse expert contexts and solve typical problems in medical informatics with appropriate methods. The course is held in conjunction with the Faculty of Medicine Mannheim at Heidelberg University. 

Career opportunities

Computer science in the medical sector is growing in importance. From protecting sensitive medical data to communicating between the various stations in the health system, to image-processing procedures in diagnostics – you’ll be working at the cutting-edge of these topics. You'll analyse complex contexts from the field of medicine in interdisciplinary teams. As part of this, your role will be to design and specifically implement extensive software systems. As a linking pin between computer science and medicine you’ll work in the following areas:

Course objectives

The degree programme in Medical Informatics is an interdisciplinary and application-oriented course. It is geared towards information technology systems and data processing in medicine:

  • fundamentals and terminology of medical informatics, medicine and biology and general IT,
  • applications for medicine and the health sector,
  • medical and biological fundamentals,
  • processes in the health sector,
  • standardisation process and syntactic and semantic interoperability in health care,
  • documentation procedure, classifications and nomenclatures in the health sector,
  • data protection and IT security in the health sector,
  • medical image and signal processing and medical technology,
  • mobile and wireless information processing in the health sector,
  • biostatistical, biometric, epidemiologic and bioinformatic procedures.

During your course you can choose individual specialisations from a range of electives. You can take a closer look at current trends, depending on your interests.

Transfer options

The structure of our course means you have the option of transferring between our three bachelor's degree programmes, Computer Science, Medical Informatics and Enterprise Computing. Many subjects are offered as part of all three degree programmes and can thus be recognised when transferring.


Following the bachelor's degree programme, you can work towards a Master's in Computer Science specialising in Medical Informatics in a further three semesters.If you graduate from the master's degree programme, you are eligible to pursue doctoral studies.

The Standing Committee for Accreditation (Ständige Akkreditierungskommission, SAK) reaccredited the "Medical Informatics" bachelor's degree programme for a further seven years in July 2013.  This seven-year period expires at the end of the 2019/2020 winter semester.

Die Ständige Akkreditierungskommission (SAK) hat in ihrer 62. Sitzung am 2. Juli 2013 die Reakkreditierung des Bachelorstudiengangs „Informatik“  für die Dauer von sieben Jahren beschlossen. Die Frist endet mit Ablauf des Wintersemesters 2019/20.
